Adams Plus Flea & Tick Collar for Dogs
★★★★☆
4.1 / 5 — Solid for indoor or low-activity dogs

At $1.71 per month, the Adams Plus is the cheapest effective flea collar in my rankings. It uses a well-studied ingredient combination and delivers consistent results for dogs that aren't regularly wet. Not the right choice for swimmers or high-humidity outdoor environments—but for urban dogs with moderate exposure, it does the job without asking you to think about it.

Who Is This For?

The Adams Plus is the right call in a specific scenario: you have a dog with limited outdoor exposure—daily walks, minimal wildlife contact, no swimming—and you need solid flea prevention at the lowest possible monthly cost. That describes a lot of urban and suburban pets. For those dogs, the Adams Plus covers what needs to be covered without the premium pricing of Seresto.

It's not right for dogs that swim, dogs in Southern states during peak flea season (June–September), or dogs that have regular contact with wildlife or high-exposure outdoor environments. In those cases the Adams' thinner water resistance will show up as early-expiring protection.

Ingredients and How They Work

Adams Plus uses tetrachlorvinphos and (S)-methoprene. Tetrachlorvinphos (TCVP) is an organophosphate that kills adult fleas and ticks by disrupting their nervous system. Methoprene is an insect growth regulator that prevents eggs and larvae from developing. Together they cover both the active infestation and the next generation.

TCVP has been on the market since the 1960s and has one of the longer safety records of any flea control active ingredient. The same combination appears in the Hartz UltraGuard Plus and Zodiac collars. It's not cutting-edge chemistry, but it works and it's well-understood.

Water limitation: Adams Plus loses effectiveness faster with regular bathing or swimming than Seresto or Hartz ProMax. If your dog gets wet more than twice a month, plan to replace it earlier than the 7-month label suggests.

How It Compares to Hartz and Seresto

Adams Plus, Hartz UltraGuard Plus, and Zodiac all use the same tetrachlorvinphos + methoprene combination. The practical differences between them are minimal—the main variable is price and pack size. Hartz ProMax uses a different active (deltamethrin) that has marginally stronger tick coverage. Seresto uses imidacloprid + flumethrin and leads the field on both protection rate and water resistance.

If cost is the primary driver, Adams Plus edges out the competition at $1.71/month. If you want the best budget option with slightly stronger tick coverage, Hartz ProMax at $2.27/month is worth the extra dollar.
